Aalo Atomics Breaks Ground on Pioneering Nuclear Reactor for Data Center Energy

Aalo Atomics, a trailblazing enterprise, is constructing the Aalo-X experimental nuclear reactor in close proximity to Idaho National Laboratory (INL), making it the first company to initiate construction under President Donald Trump’s Nuclear Reactor Pilot Program.

This groundbreaking initiative aims to push the boundaries of nuclear technology, addressing the escalating energy demands of data centers through AI-optimized modular nuclear energy solutions.

The Aalo-X is an advanced extra modular reactor (XMR) strategically positioned next to INL’s Materials and Fuels Complex. The company targets achieving criticality by July 4, 2026, a milestone signifying the point at which the nuclear reaction becomes self-sustaining.

Aalo’s participation in the program stemmed from its successful selection by the Department of Energy (DOE) following a stringent competitive application process. This collaboration underscores the synergy between public and private sectors in fostering advancements within the nuclear energy market.

The DOE launched the Nuclear Reactor Pilot Program in June 2025, following Executive Order 14301, revamping conventional reactor testing methodologies.
