Roblox Unveils TikTok-Style Video Feed, AI Tools, and Performance Upgrades for Creators, Enhancing Gaming Experience and Earnings
Roblox, a leading online gaming platform, unveiled plans for a TikTok-style short-form video feed to showcase gameplay moments at their Developers Conference last Friday. This new feature, titled “Roblox Moments,” will be available in beta for users aged 13 and over.
With Roblox Moments, players can capture and edit clips of their gameplay, then share them on a scrollable feed. The clips can be trimmed to up to 30 seconds, enhanced with music, and accompanied by a description. Users can also interact with the community by reacting to shared moments using emojis and jumping directly into an experience from a video.
In the near future, Roblox will offer API-based capabilities for creators, enabling them to develop their own in-game creation and discovery systems. This includes showcasing popular clips, creating leaderboards, and highlighting unique gameplay moments. The platform is planning a gradual rollout of this feature to ensure effective moderation of age-appropriate content. All user-generated content will undergo moderation before posting, with provisions for reporting inappropriate videos.
Roblox has also increased earnings for creators by enhancing the DevEx (Developer Exchange) rate. This change allows creators to earn 8.5% more when converting their Robux into cash, equating to $380 instead of $350 from 100,000 Robux. The company emphasized that this move underscores their commitment to fostering an economy where creators can thrive and succeed, with the average revenue for Top 1000 developers reaching almost $1 million, up 2.9x since 2020.
New AI tools are being introduced to empower creators, offering artistic freedom, improved functionality, and smarter development assistance. Creators can now generate fully functional objects beyond static 3D ones, starting with select vehicles and weapons categories. For instance, a creator could describe “a sleek, futuristic red sports car,” and Roblox would generate an interactive car that can be customized.
Roblox is also set to launch real-time voice chat translation capabilities starting next year, supporting English, Spanish, French, and German. Additionally, new text-to-speech and speech-to-text APIs will enable creators to build more immersive and interactive experiences. The text-to-speech API offers instant narration and character dialogue with 10 customizable English voice presets, while the speech-to-text API supports voice commands for gameplay actions like firing a cannon upon hearing the command “Fire!”
Improvements in performance and fidelity are also on the horizon. Roblox will introduce a new mode called “Server Authority” to minimize in-game cheating and make physics interactions more realistic. Avatars will soon exhibit more lifelike motion, including running, climbing, and vaulting over obstacles with natural momentum. Complex actions for avatars, like grasping items with fingers, will also see improvements.
Roblox is working on enhancements to run the platform at a higher fidelity across devices without requiring additional effort from creators or sacrificing performance. These updates follow Roblox’s recent announcements about expanding age-estimation technology to all users and partnering with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) to introduce age and content ratings for games and apps on its platform, amid ongoing child safety concerns.
