Google Shuts Down Google Tables: Users Advised to Migrate Data to Google Sheets or AppSheet

Google’s productivity tool, Tables, designed for streamlined work tracking and a rival to Airtable’s spreadsheet-database hybrid, is ceasing operations.

In an email communicated to users this week, Google announced that the app will no longer receive support as of December 16, 2025. Users are recommended to either export or migrate their data to Google Sheets or AppSheet, depending on their requirements, to continue their workflow.

Debuting in 2020, Tables aimed to revolutionize project management through automation. It was among the numerous projects conceived within Google’s in-house app development hub, Area 120, dedicated at the time to nurturing experimental projects. Some of these projects eventually graduated and became integral components of Google’s offerings across Cloud, Search, Shopping, and more.

tables demonstrated promising potential early on; Google revealed in 2021 that the service was transitioning from a beta phase to becoming an official product under Google Cloud. At the time, the company envisioned Tables as a versatile solution for various use cases such as project management, IT operations, customer service tracking, CRM, recruiting, and product development, among others.

The app was spearheaded by Google employee Tim Gleason, who had spent over a decade with the company. Later, Gleason took on the role of tech lead manager for Notebook LM before announcing his retirement, set to commence in September 2024.

Area 120 faced restructuring within Google in 2022, resulting in the cancellation of half its projects and a reduction in force that halved the size of the in-house R&D division. The remaining division focused solely on AI projects, according to Google.

In 2023, Area 120 was gradually phased out amid broader layoffs, with a select few projects transitioning to core Google product areas. One such project was Aloud, which developed tools enabling creators to quickly dub their videos. In 2023, YouTube introduced an auto-dubbing feature, now broadly available.

tables managed to endure these changes as it belonged to the Google Workspace team under Google Cloud. Regrettably, the service now shares a similar fate, with its own discontinuation date set.

The email advises Tables administrators to export their data either directly to Google Sheets, subsequently managing their workflow using tables and conditional notifications, or leverage a new migration tool to import their data onto Google’s no-code platform, AppSheet. This option preserves formatting details like column types and relationships, allowing users to manage the workflow via automations, fine-grained permissions, and Workspace integrations, according to Google.

Earlier this month, Google announced the pending closure of Tables on its official website and directed users to a FAQ. The document revealed that the team behind Tables had developed a new data experience for powering automated apps and workflows directly within AppSheet. Launched in June 2023, this alternative allows users to design custom data models and workflows within AppSheet itself.
