Revolutionary Lumi Max Portable Projector Offers Compact Design, Google TV Integration, and Superior Sound Quality for $400
In my latest living quarters, the television did not make the cut during the harmonious parting of ways with a roommate. Although my studio is more spacious than previous dwellings, accommodating a bulky TV within the living area still felt inefficient.
My hunt for an alternative led me to cross paths with Lumi Labs and their innovative portable projector, the Lumi Max. Upon unboxing it, I was struck by how far projector technology has advanced since my university days, when I grappled with a murky one lent from a friend that projected low-quality videos onto my dorm wall.
One of the aspects that drew me to the Lumi Max is its sleek, compact design. It stands vertically, making it ideal for small spaces and easily accommodated on a shelf or tucked away when not in use. Weighing less than 4.5 pounds, it is significantly lighter than many other projectors available today. The founders are passionate outdoor enthusiasts, so the device is designed to fit comfortably into backpacks, making it convenient for travel and setup in outdoor settings, complete with a carrying case.
The standout feature of the Lumi Max, which launched earlier this month, is its partnership with Google. The projector runs on Google TV by default, offering access to over 10,000 apps, more than 700,000 movies and TV shows, and over 800 free live TV channels out of the box. Setup is straightforward if you already have a Google account, and it includes a remote for effortless navigation.
Beyond the built-in Google TV, other features piqued my interest, such as autofocus and obstacle avoidance capabilities. The Lumi Max can recognize objects on the wall – including picture frames, plants, or shelves – and automatically adjust the image placement. Since I have yet to adorn my walls with artwork, I had a blank canvas at my disposal. However, it did alert me when furniture was obstructing the view, enabling me to easily rearrange for optimal visual experience.
The display size is also impressive: 40 to 120 inches and coupled with 1080p full HD resolution and 4K UHD compatibility.
Another unexpected delight was the sound quality. The Lumi Max boasts two 5W speakers (offering a total audio output of 10W), and it also supports Dolby Audio, allowing you to connect it to an external sound system for enhanced audio performance.
The price point is reasonable at around $400, given the wealth of features it offers, particularly when considering the cost of a decent-quality television.
Lumi Labs also sells adjustable projector stands for $30 and 100-inch projector screens for $20 on their website. The company is planning to introduce a “Lumi IQ” mobile app equipped with an AI assistant, enabling users to control the projector via voice commands.
