Uber to Partner with Joby Aviation for Electric Helicopter Services in Popular Routes Starting Next Year

In a significant development for the future of urban travel, Joby Aviation has revealed plans to introduce electric helicopter services via Blade Air Mobility on the Uber platform as early as next year. While the exact locations have not been disclosed, these services are expected to be rolled out on popular routes, such as those connecting major airports.

The announcement follows Joby’s acquisition of Blade’s passenger business for up to $125 million in November. The medical division of Blade, which specializes in organ transportation, remains a separate entity.

This collaboration marks a step towards integrating Joby’s futuristic air taxis into Uber’s ride-hailing network, albeit with commercial operations not expected to begin until 2026, initially in Dubai. Subsequent markets, including those within the United States, are slated for implementation following Dubai’s launch.

All parties involved share pre-existing relationships. Joby acquired Blade’s passenger business last month, and while Blade’s helicopters have previously appeared on Uber’s platform in limited promotional offerings, Joby also acquired Uber’s “Elevate” air taxi division in 2020. This acquisition provided a significant boost to Joby’s ambitious plans for developing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles.

Since going public through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company in 2021, Joby has secured substantial funding, including support from major companies like Toyota. Uber currently holds around 2.5% stake in Joby.

However, not all eVTOL startups have fared as well. Companies such as Germany’s Volocopter and Lillium have ceased operations, while Hyundai-owned Supernal is currently grappling with its own challenges, having recently paused its aircraft program.
