Stellantis Abandons All-Electric Ram 1500 for Extended-Range Pickup with 690-Mile Range

Stellantis Abandons All-Electric Ram 1500 for Extended-Range Pickup with 690-Mile Range

Stellantis, the parent company behind Ram trucks, has announced a shift in its electric vehicle (EV) strategy for full-size pickups. Instead of developing a battery-electric model, as previously planned, the company will focus on an extended-range truck with an estimated range of approximately 690 miles.

The decision comes due to lower than expected demand for full-size battery-electric trucks in North America, according to a statement from Stellantis. The Ram 1500 REV, previously known as the Ramcharger, will be the vehicle that embodies this new approach. It is anticipated to set new standards in the half-ton segment, offering exceptional range, towing capability, and payload performance.

The name change may seem confusing, but it reflects Stellantis’ decision to abandon plans for a battery electric pickup and instead pursue an extended-range truck that combines a battery with a gas generator for power. This approach is not unprecedented in the industry.

Initially, Stellantis had intended to debut this EV truck in 2024. However, timelines have been adjusted several times, with the launch now expected in 2026. The extended-range Ram 1500 will mark the beginning of production in that year.

Stellantis unveiled the all-electric Ram 1500 at CES 2023, and while the initial response was positive, plans for its production have been subject to some alterations since then. The vehicle was set to feature advanced technology, a spacious cabin with third-row seating, and two large battery pack options. However, these plans have been revised, with the launch now expected in 2026.
